Center of Gravity¶
Why It Matters¶
Attacking strength head-on is costly. Identifying and striking the center of gravity can produce systemic defeat with less direct confrontation.
The Key Move¶
Ask: what enables the enemy to fight? What, if destroyed or neutralized, would cause their entire effort to collapse? It might be military (main army), political (leadership legitimacy), economic (industrial base), or moral (public will).
Classic Application¶
Identifying Napoleon as center of gravity. His personal leadership held the empire together. Defeating him personally (not just his armies) was necessary for lasting victory.
Surprising Application¶
Business competition. What's the competitor's center of gravity? Might be a key customer relationship, a technology moat, a distribution advantage, or key talent. Disrupting that specifically is more effective than competing everywhere.
Failure Modes¶
- Attacking obvious strength rather than true center of gravity
- Misidentifying center of gravity (common - it's often not obvious)
- Center of gravity shifting during conflict (it's dynamic)
