Defense vs Offense

Why It Matters

The asymmetry between offense and defense shapes all strategy. Attackers need superiority to overcome defensive advantage. Defenders must eventually counterattack to win.

The Key Move

Ask: am I in an offensive or defensive posture? If offensive, do I have enough superiority to overcome defensive advantage? If defensive, when and how do I transition to offense?

Classic Application

WWI trench warfare. Defensive technology (machine guns, artillery, trenches) far outpaced offensive capability. Attackers paid horrific costs for minimal gains until new offensive technologies (tanks, combined arms) restored balance.

Surprising Application

Market incumbents vs entrants. Incumbents have defensive advantages (brand, distribution, relationships). Entrants must have significant innovation to overcome these. But incumbents that only defend eventually lose to accumulated attacks.

Failure Modes

  • Attacking without sufficient superiority
  • Defending passively without planning counteroffense
  • Misjudging the offense-defense balance
