Destruction vs Exhaustion¶
Why It Matters¶
Mismatching strategy to objective wastes resources. Trying to annihilate when you can only exhaust leads to overreach. Trying to exhaust when annihilation is possible prolongs unnecessary conflict.
The Key Move¶
Ask: what kind of victory is possible? Do I have the capability to destroy the enemy's capacity to resist? Or must I wear down their will and resources over time? Match strategy to achievable end state.
Classic Application¶
American Civil War. Union strategy evolved from seeking decisive battle (destruction) to exhausting Southern resources and will (Sherman's march, naval blockade). The latter proved decisive.
Surprising Application¶
Competitive strategy. Some competition aims at knockout (destroy competitor, capture market). Other competition is attrition (sustain longer than competitors, exhaust their resources/patience). Venture-backed blitzscaling is annihilation strategy; bootstrap profitability is exhaustion strategy.
Failure Modes¶
- Seeking annihilation without capability for it
- Impatience in exhaustion strategy
- Not recognizing when enemy shifts between strategies
