Initiative

Why It Matters

Reactive posture is inherently disadvantaged. You're always responding to the opponent's previous action, using resources to address their agenda rather than advance yours.

The Key Move

Ask: who is dictating events? If opponent has initiative, how do I seize it? If I have it, how do I maintain it? Initiative is seized through action that forces response and maintained through sustained pressure.

Classic Application

Blitzkrieg. Continuous offensive action that never allowed the defender to stabilize, regroup, or regain initiative. By the time one crisis was addressed, three more had been created.

Surprising Application

Negotiation. Setting the agenda, making the first offer, creating deadlines - these seize initiative. The party responding is at disadvantage. Tactics that retake initiative: introducing new issues, changing scope, walking away.

Failure Modes

  • Confusing activity with initiative (busy reaction isn't initiative)
  • Attempting to seize initiative without capability to sustain it
  • Yielding initiative without recognizing it
