Intelligence and Reconnaissance

Why It Matters

While fog is irreducible, it's not uniform. Investment in intelligence can reduce uncertainty at critical decision points, improving orientation in the OODA loop.

The Key Move

Ask: what do I most need to know? Where is uncertainty most dangerous? Focus intelligence efforts on those questions rather than general awareness. Reconnaissance pulls - find specific information needed for decision.

Classic Application

Cavalry screens in pre-modern warfare. Find the enemy main body, determine their disposition, screen your own movement. Specific questions: where are they, how many, what direction?

Surprising Application

Customer research. Not general "market research" but specific questions that inform specific decisions. What would cause customers to switch? What alternative are they actually considering? Reconnaissance against specific uncertainties.

Failure Modes

  • Gathering information without decision context
  • Analysis paralysis waiting for complete picture
  • Intelligence bias (seeing what you want to see)
  • Neglecting counter-intelligence (enemy is gathering on you too)
