Logistics as Strategy¶
Why It Matters¶
You can't execute strategies you can't supply. Logistics constrains the possible. Many strategies fail not from combat loss but from supply failure.
The Key Move¶
Before committing to a strategy, ask: can I sustain this? What's the supply requirement? What's my reach? Logistics determines the boundary of the possible.
Classic Application¶
Pacific War island-hopping. Strategy was fundamentally logistical - which islands enabled supply chains for further advance? Combat was in service of logistics, not vice versa.
Surprising Application¶
Growth strategy. "Can we execute this?" requires asking: do we have the people, the capital, the operational capacity? Growth that exceeds sustainment capacity fails regardless of market opportunity.
Failure Modes¶
- Strategy exceeding logistical reach
- Assuming logistics will work out (it requires explicit planning)
- Neglecting logistics because it's not exciting
- Opponent interdicting your logistics
