Mission Analysis¶
Why It Matters¶
Acting without understanding the mission wastes resources. Misunderstanding the mission can be worse than inaction.
The Key Move¶
Before acting, ask: what is my specified task (explicit)? What are my implied tasks (necessary for specified task)? What is the higher commander's intent (my task's purpose in context)? What are my constraints (can't do) and restraints (must do)?
Classic Application¶
Military planning process. Every order is analyzed for explicit and implicit tasks, constraints, commander's intent. This prevents executing the letter while missing the spirit.
Surprising Application¶
Project kickoff. Before executing, clarify: what are we explicitly asked to deliver? What's implicit but necessary? What's the real purpose (so we can adapt if circumstances change)? What can't we do, what must we do?
Failure Modes¶
- Executing stated task while missing actual purpose
- Analysis paralysis (analyzing instead of acting)
- Assuming task is clear when it isn't
- Not clarifying when mission analysis reveals ambiguity
