OODA Loop¶
Why It Matters¶
Speed of decision isn't just about clock time. Getting inside the opponent's OODA loop means they're perpetually reacting to your past action while you're already acting on new information.
The Key Move¶
Compress your own OODA loop (faster observation, better orientation, quicker decision, faster action). Expand the opponent's loop (create confusion, disrupt observation, complicate their decision process).
Classic Application¶
Fighter combat. Boyd's original context. The pilot who cycles faster observes the opponent's response, reorients, and acts again while the opponent is still responding to the previous action. Creates compounding advantage.
Surprising Application¶
Business iteration. Companies that ship, observe customer response, and iterate faster than competitors gain compounding advantage. Each cycle provides information that informs the next action.
Failure Modes¶
- Optimizing one phase while bottlenecking another
- Speed without orientation (acting fast on bad understanding)
- Assuming OODA is purely about clock speed (orientation quality matters too)
