Tempo

Why It Matters

Superior tempo creates compounding advantage. Each action is based on more recent information than the opponent's response. They're always one step behind.

The Key Move

Increase your tempo (faster decision cycles, pre-delegated authority, rehearsed responses). Decrease opponent's tempo (create confusion, disrupt communications, force complex decisions). Relative tempo matters more than absolute.

Classic Application

German combined arms operations. Speed of exploitation meant French command was always responding to the previous day's situation while Germans had already moved on. Slow French tempo meant they could never stabilize.

Surprising Application

Competitive product development. Ship fast, observe, iterate. Competitor responds to your previous version while you're already shipping the next. Their roadmap is obsoleted by your reality.

Failure Modes

  • Confusing activity with tempo (busy isn't fast)
  • Tempo without direction (running fast in circles)
  • Burning out attempting to sustain unsustainable tempo
  • Opponent simply refusing to engage at your tempo
