The Culminating Point¶
Why It Matters¶
Knowing when to stop is as important as knowing when to push. Overextension turns victory into defeat. The culminating point marks the limit of achievable objectives.
The Key Move¶
For any offensive action, ask: what resources are being consumed? At what point will I be weaker than my opponent? Where should I consolidate rather than continue? Stopping at the culminating point preserves gains; pushing past it loses them.
Classic Application¶
Napoleon's invasion of Russia. The offensive succeeded brilliantly until culmination. Pushing to Moscow and beyond exhausted the army and turned victory into catastrophe.
Surprising Application¶
Negotiations. Pushing for every possible concession can trigger resistance that loses the deal entirely. Knowing when you've achieved enough - and stopping - often produces better outcomes than maximizing.
Failure Modes¶
- Confusing momentum with progress
- Stopping too early (not reaching the culminating point)
- Not recognizing culmination until after overextension
