Delays and Oscillation

Why It Matters

Delays are everywhere - shipping times, reaction times, information propagation. Ignoring them causes policy mistakes (over-correcting, then over-correcting the other way).

The Key Move

Identify the delay in the feedback loop. Ask: how long between action and observable effect? If the delay is long relative to the adjustment frequency, expect oscillation. The cure: slow down adjustments or improve sensing.

Classic Application

Shower temperature. You turn the knob, nothing happens (delay in pipe), you turn more, then suddenly it's scalding, you overcorrect, then freezing. Oscillation due to delay.

Surprising Application

Economic policy. Monetary policy acts with "long and variable lags." If policymakers adjust rates based on current inflation, they're responding to the past and creating future oscillation.

Failure Modes

  • Increasing action when you don't see immediate results
  • Ignoring that the delay itself may be variable
  • Confusing delayed effect with no effect
