Diminishing and Increasing Returns¶
Why It Matters¶
Diminishing returns favor diversification; increasing returns favor concentration. The character of returns determines optimal strategy.
The Key Move¶
Ask: what's the shape of the return curve? If diminishing (concave), spread resources across multiple uses. If increasing (convex), concentrate resources on a single use.
Classic Application¶
Agriculture. Fertilizer shows diminishing returns - the first pound helps a lot, the tenth less so. Better to spread fertilizer across fields than concentrate on one.
Surprising Application¶
Learning and skill. Early learning shows increasing returns (basic competence opens options). Later learning shows diminishing returns (incremental expertise costs more). Optimal strategy shifts from concentration (build basic competence) to diversification (apply competence broadly).
Failure Modes¶
- Assuming one type of return everywhere
- Ignoring that different inputs may have different return shapes
- Missing transition points between increasing and diminishing regimes
