Homeostasis and Setpoints¶
Why It Matters¶
Understanding the setpoint reveals what a system is maintaining and why interventions often fail - you push, the system pushes back.
The Key Move¶
Ask: what is this system maintaining? What feedback loops defend the current state? If you want to change the state, you must either change the setpoint or overwhelm the feedback long enough to establish a new equilibrium.
Classic Application¶
Body weight setpoint theory. The body defends a particular weight through hunger, metabolism, and activity adjustments. Diets fail when they fight the setpoint without changing it.
Surprising Application¶
Organizational culture. Organizations have implicit setpoints for how things are done. New initiatives get absorbed or rejected based on fit with the setpoint. Change requires changing the setpoint, not just introducing new practices.
Failure Modes¶
- Fighting the symptom rather than the setpoint
- Expecting permanent change from temporary intervention
- Assuming all systems have fixed setpoints (some are adaptive)
