Redundancy and Degeneracy¶
Why It Matters¶
Both provide resilience but differ in cost and failure correlation. Redundancy is simpler but vulnerable to common-mode failures. Degeneracy is more complex but more robust.
The Key Move¶
Ask: what provides backup if this component fails? Is the backup identical (redundancy) or different (degeneracy)? Redundancy fails together under common causes. Degeneracy survives because failures are uncorrelated.
Classic Application¶
Aircraft systems. Redundant hydraulics (multiple identical systems) vs degenerate flight control (hydraulic, electric, and mechanical systems that can all control surfaces).
Surprising Application¶
Skills and career. Redundant skills: multiple ways to do the same task the same way. Degenerate skills: different capabilities that can substitute for each other in varied contexts. Degeneracy is more valuable under uncertainty.
Failure Modes¶
- Treating redundancy as automatically providing resilience (common-mode failures)
- Ignoring the cost of maintaining degenerate capabilities
- Not testing whether backups actually work when needed
